Walk into any computer store and either look at the cute little sticker they put on the case or just ask the sales representative and they will almost always let you know exactly how much memory, or RAM, the computer has. Ask them what it means and depending on where you're shopping you may or may not get an answer. The purpose of this article is to help you get a better grasp on what you need to look for when it comes to computer memory.

A more common name for computer memory is RAM. RAM stands for Random Access Memory. For those of you who are not fluent in computer lingo you may still be complexly lost.

To help you understand better about the purpose of RAM we will go over how anything gets done on your computer without RAM. Each time you start an application on your computer it goes through many steps to bring up the application you are wanting. It usually starts with an input device such as a keyboard or a mouse. Let's pick on a well known application that most of you are probably familiar with; Notepad. You would start by taking a hold of your mouse and clicking on the start Menu. Doing so would in turn pop up a Menu. From that Menu you would find and click on notepad. Once you click on the notepad icon, information is sent electronically through the wire of the mouse down to your USB or PS/2 port on your motherboard. When it gets there the information then travels to your processor. The processor then decides where it needs to send this information. Most of the time, the information is needed to be sent to your hard drive, since your hard drive is where most of your information is kept. Once the information gets to your hard drive it then searches for Notepad. All the files needed to run Notepad are sent back to your processor. The processor then sends the files where they need to go to run Notepad.

Now that seems like a long journey to pull up an application as simple as Notepad, doesn't it? This is what makes RAM so wonderful. All those files that are needed to run Notepad can be stored on RAM. When you click on the Notepad icon on your start menu your RAM will actually send the required files needed to run Notepad rather than the long trip explained above. This alleviates a lot of stress on your computer. Instead of worrying about where the files that are needed are and searching for them, RAM will step up and let your computer know, "Hey, I have those files right here! You can start Notepad now!"

If you have ever seen a stick of RAM you may have noticed that it looks a lot like little black squares attached to the greenish colored circuit board. These little black squares are where the information is stored.

RAM does this for starting and running all applications on your computer. The most important thing you must remember when looking at memory is that each application you need to run requires a certain amount of RAM in order for it work correctly. The more you have the better off you will be and the Faster your computer will run. You have to be cautious though, having too much RAM can cause problems. The problems mainly arise because of a combination of both hardware and software restrictions. If you have a fAirly recent computer you could safely get away with running 2GBs of computer memory. The operating system you probably use, Windows XP, will only support up to 4GBs. This isn't a lot when you compare the size to hard drive space. But your computer doesn't need a lot of RAM because the information that is stored in it is not permanent. It would be almost impossible for you to run so many applications and work on them all to 'fill up' your RAM with application information. But as technology grows applications will require more and more RAM to operate. So the amount of RAM that you can safely use will eventually increase. Windows XP 64-bit version already supports up to 16GBs of RAM and although it hasn't gone retail yet, Windows Vista will also support up to 16GBs. This will allow for programmers to create a more diverse range of applications to run on your computer.

The underlying factor in the benefits of getting RAM is two-fold. It relives stress on your CPU and can make your computer a lot Faster. Now if you upgrade from 512MB to 1GB you may not see much of a difference. Going from 512MB to 2GB will undoubtedly show you some massive speed improvements with your computer. Always be sure to check with your motherboard documentation before getting RAM for your computer. Each motherboard will only support a certain type of RAM. Don't make the mistake of buying RAM that you can't even use.

Why laptop Computer memory matters?

The topic of laptop memory size is by no means new. What is more distinct however is that most people hear advice such as "more memory is always better" and automatically conclude that this stateMent is true whatever the use of your Computer. The real truth behind this is that while such advice is generally correct, it is best understood once one appreciates the background facts. All laptop Computers make use of a certain Operating System - Microsoft Windows is by far the most popular (Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista or 7 etc.). This is the software that both interacts and manages two aspects: a) the hardware and other software used on it and b) the user (hardware).

An Operating System must load its own components into memory when it starts. In effect, a large chunk of its footprint gets copied into physical memory within your notebook computer, this in turn found on the memory modules inside your laptop's chassis. To add to this, any additional software that is necessary to run your laptop computer for the purposes you use it is also loaded. This usually means any device drivers and third Party software. Ideally the Operating System attempts to allocate most or all the above in physical memory. If there is an insufficient amount of such memory, the Operating System will imitate it on your laptop's storage medium. The latter will in most cases mean a hard drive or solid state drive (in newer laptops). The term given to describe it is virtual memory.

Since both a hard drive and solid state drive are considerably slower than notebook computer memory, the effect of this is that performance will be degraded. The net outcome of this is that it may take longer for software programs to load, to run, to shutdown, and to switch between (multi-task) etc. The more of these software programs run in such circumstances, the more the performance will suffer.

How much laptop computer memory is enough?

A cure to the above problem are laptop memory upgrades. This will expand the total amount of physical memory in your laptop computer and either reduce or completely eliminate the slowdown associated with insufficient physical memory. How much laptop computer memory is enough is subject to two different aspects: a) what types of software do you use on your laptop computer and b) how much laptop memory does your laptop computer support.

To answer part "A" you need to ask yourself what software you use. For example, you may simply use it for Internet browsing, word processing, the odd game. Alternatively you may use it professionally for graphics work or audio or video editing. Furthermore you may be an avid gamer. Each of these scenarios reflects a different optimum amount of laptop computer memory. For simple Internet browsing and similar 2GB will in most cases be enough. If however you are a professional doing graphics/audio or video work then anything between 4-8GB will probably suit you best. If on the other hand you are a gamer, 4GB or more is likely what you should be aiming for.

To answer Part "B" is a little trickier because in order to determine how much laptop computer memory your laptop supports, you need to either look into the user manual (not always possible and exhaustive) or determine the memory controller it uses. Either method works with the latter being more for the hardcore computer user. Luckily, there are tools online that will scan your laptop computer and tell you this information without any or much technical awareness on your part. You can find these tools by simply searching online, or optionally visiting my website. Whatever the outcome from part "A" or part "B" you should always opt for the most optimum laptop memory upgrades, both for your laptop computer and the tasks you use it for. As a result you will guarantee a smoother user experience.

In Summary

RAM or Random Access Memory is volatile memory that is erased when the power goes off. Program instructions and data held in RAM can be accessed and saved much more quickly than that held in permanent storage. Therefore, files needed to run a program and data that is being processed are held in RAM while they are in use. Generally, off-the-rack machines come with 8 to 16MB, more than enough for a general purpose computer.

With improved handling of memory, reduced access times, and lower cost have conspired to make larger amounts of RAM practical. Which in turn has given programmers free rein to add more bells and whistles. This also helps programmers to become more creative in writing programs that require more RAM. There is reason to believe that this trend will continue.

As for static memory, you don't have to be very old to remember buying a computer without a hard drive, then later installing a 20MB hard drive, unable to imagine ever needing more storage than that. Today, a 250MB hard drive is popular; however, most new computers are in the 500 to 1000MB( 1 gigabyte) range. And you may need all of that MB and then some.

Computer Memory fact #1: For the faint of heart, when programs or data files are called up from permanent storage, they are not moved, they are merely copied. If the power goes off during processing, programs generally are safe. The only loss will be data that was changed since the last save.

Hard Disk-this can be one of the worst problems to have as if your hard drive does fail, unless you have been responsive and done regular backups of your most valuable data, you standto lose it all. Hard disks can go at any time and usually you will hear a harsh sounding clicking noise that is coming from your computer. If this is the case you need to probably replace the hard disk. Get someone who then knows what they are doing here to try and recover your old data for you.

If none of the above solves your problem then you could possibly be looking at the fault being with the motherboard or any other Plug in cards or devices you have. Remove everything to leave only the very basics. Take out all sound cards etc and any other PCI devices that are not essential. If you have more than one stick of ram then leave in only one and see if the problem resolves.

There is also a type of memory that is referred to as working memory. It can be viewed as a form of short term memory, in that it refers to the limited store that is needed in order for certain Mental tasks to be performed. Whereas short term memory is rooted in duration, working memory is defined by purpose. Baddeley's Model of Working Memory defines three components to this type of memory -the verbal store, the visuo-spatial sketchpad, and the central executive, which determines control and rehearsal.

Finally, there is long term memory. Unlike short term and sensory memories, which disappear in abrief amount of time, long term refers to memories that can be stored for a period of up to several years. Psychologists disagree on how long term memory works. Some argue that a long term memory remains in the brain forever, but this is impossible to prove, as there has never been a human being who has lived forever!

While it was once thought that there was no real determining factor between what made in short term memory and long term one, research has since established that the brain contains numerous systems of memory and that information is constantly being transferred among these various systems. Hence, the ongoing research in to the mysterious nature of how memory works.

Here's one problem that is mostly overlooked. Any changes you make to your computer effects and actually corrupts your registry. So, it stands to reason, even when you do something positive; like remove spyware, you end up with a corrupted registry.

After months of corrupting your registry, albeit unintentionally, it will becomegood and out of whack. This will, in its early sTAGes, causes your computer to slow down. In its advanced sTAGes, it will freeze and crash and do more mysterious and troublesome things.

Many times I hear people say they have scanned for spyware and viruses and found none, but still the computer runs very slowly. Most times, it isn't until the registry is cleaned out and repAired by a top-notch registry cleaner that the computer's speed is restored. Make sure to run a good registry cleaner every week or so to keep your registry in excellent working order. After all, the registry is what your operating system is made of.
